Rusty

After not writing since late July I've discovered that my skill has gotten a bit rusty. Re-reading my older pieces really drills in the fact that I've lost a bit. It'll come back quickly, I know. But it's still annoying. And since I'm newly back to writing I don't want to get frustrated and fall back off the wagon again. So I'm doing a short little book for my nieces about the daughter of a prison guard who can talk to horses. Their dad is a detective so I think they will appreciate the main character being a child of "law enforcement" and, like most girls in the third grade, they love horses. Blondie Girl more so than my Mini Me (who will be more impressed with the fact that there is a princess in the story). I'm making the MC not the princess because I want her to really be a rough and tumble dirty kneed girl. Sure, a princess COULD be that, but I want her to be the underdog. I've not ever really written for kids (or at least not since I was one) so it's fun and hopefully it will get the gears going again. This isn't indended to be published, just something to amuse my nieces :)

What do you do when you feel a bit rusty or need a change of pace creatively?

You go girl!

First off, I make a pot of coffee (I don't drink much, but it always revs me up).
Secondly, I just try to observe everything that's going on around me.

When all else fails, I go to bed because my best thoughts usually hit me in those early hours just before I wake up. (Oh, and in the shower—that works too!)

I'd love if you'd check out my new Haiku blog, Lauren.

@poetikat- I love coffee. Yesterday I wore a shirt that had a coffee cup that was low with the low battery icon over it and then something that said coffee --> energy. I will have to take a picture and post it. I totally killed the humor :-P

I just went over to your Haiku blog. I love it :) Looking forward to seeing more Haikus!

I never feel particularly creative. However, I ignore this, put my head down, and just plod ahead.

I've always felt that writing is a muscle you have to work like the rest of them. If left stagnant for too long, it goes all floppy. Good for you getting back to it. The words will flow soon, don't worry.

Absolutely. It's amazing how fast rust will cover my skills.

Yeah, this is really why I write every day. I take a day off, and I can barely write the next day!

It's amazing how quickly writing muscles atrophy, isn't it? Whenever I'm stuck I write a blog post. Sometimes working on something that's not the WIP helps me move forward.

@writer- that's a good way to go about it.

@anissa- I never really thought of it that way, but that is so true. I definetly need to work on my writer's muscle to get it back up to snuff.

@charles- I hear ya.

@spy- I think that's really the only way to do it.

@Lisa and Laura- Blogging really helps me too. I think that seeing other motivated people helps me feel more motivated :)

Personally, I usually end up banging my head against a wall. That tends to get the creative juices flowing.

Well, somethings gets going anyway.

Welcome back to writing!

I go to our lake cabin where there is literally no access to the outside world; no internet, no phone, no traffic, no television. Nothing like good old fashion boredom to force the flow of creativity.
