Life Goals Revisited

Well, I am just about recovered from wisdom tooth surgury. I am still experiencing a decent amount of pain, but it's been decided that a nerve was probably nicked. I saw the above image online and just had to put it in.

Mostly I am just trying to play catch up. The Monday after my surgery (which I had two weeks ago today) I had an exam. I thought that I would be fine to study and then take the exam, but that didn't pan out. So no study, severe pain and heavy narcotics and I ended up getting right at average and considering it's a cross listed undergrad-grad class, I am feeling pretty okay about it. I'll just have to make sure I do really well on the other two exams. After that exam I asked my prof in my other math class if I could just take the exam later and he said that I could take it after Spring Break. But now that means that I have to study extra hard. And I have this stupid little English class that I am behind in by four assignments. I know what I am doing this weekend....

So enough whining. Since I have been out of commission, I have had lots of time to think about what I want to do. Given the current economy and the number of people pursuing and MBA right now, I have decided that I don't want to do that (which as people who have been following might recall is the whole reason I went back to finish my undergrad). Instead I think that I will get my certification in Project Management (including taking a project management certificate course at one of my target universities). After that I am thinking about maybe getting a masters in Math since I am surprisingly enjoying my Math classes (and I say surprisingly because I never really liked them and I had to take alot of advanced (post calculus) at Purdue for computer science...I have no idea what is different a few years later since the classes are fairly similar).

But where does that leave my writing? I definetly want to finish my novel by the end of the year. I think that the majority of the writing will be done during the summer, but I need to keep chugging along during the spring. I think I am going to set two days a week to take a long lunch break and write for an hour and a half. I know that is alot less than most people reading this blog, but for now, until I catch up with all the stuff I had to put off while being sick, that is really the only time that I have. Durring the summer, on the other hand, I will write for an hour and a half every day. Just now I need that other time to study.

So, next week I should be following my blog schedule again, which I said last week, I know! But Monday I will blog about the drunken debauchery that is the South Side Irish Parade, which I shall be attending this weekend. Good times.

Look forward to the drunken debauchery post on Monday. I'll live vicariously through you.

I'd like to drink simple ONE beer on St. Patrick's day, but I don't think I will. I feel guilty drinking in front of my wife when she can't drink (she's feeding the baby).

Anyhow, good luck with all the school stuff. I'm sure it will work out. I have a minor in Math, but I've forgotten a log of the Calc 2, Discrete Math stuff. That's sad, I guess.

@writer- Actually, I won't be drinking because I am still on the pain killers, but everyone else will be. Last year I saw a drunk 8 year old! And I was amazed how quickly the math came back to me after a good 6 years since calculus.

sounds like you've got a lot on your plate! It's great that you're setting aside time to write, though; that'll keep you on track. good luck with it all!

Oh yes do post about the drunken debauchery!

Neither study nor post operative pain should get in the way of that.

Green beer and writing go hand in hand. As to writing, if you work on the posts for your blog the writing ideas come calling. They do for me.

Good luck! You can only do what you can do, Lauren. At least, that's what I keep telling myself. I haven't had much time to get much writing done, either.

I miss it!

It's nice to run into someone with an actual plan for the sort of thing I just vaguely drifted into.

Slow and steady writing works for me. It might help to think of the novel as a long-term goal. That project management certificate--which is very valuable--is a great short-term goal.

WOW...you got lots on your plate to multi-task. Wish you luck for your exams.

Good luck, and glad to hear you're healing from the operation. Wisdom teeth doth sucketh.

First off, everyone thanks for commenting. It's nice to state my goals out loud and I appreciate your kind words about them.

Now to more specific responses:

@Charles- lol...thanks. I'm not going to the parade anymore, but will still blog about it as I went last year. However, I will for sure be seeking out some form of green beer tonight.

@lynn- I always do have a lot on my plate! I get so much more done that way.

@barry- Everyone needs to make a little time to have fun :)

@barbara- I don't know, posting here doesn't so much give me ideas as remind me that I want to write. More so, it is reading blogs of people like you. It reminds me that I'm not the only one with this crazy idea!

@spy- You've had a lot on your plate too! And you are right, we can only do what we can do.

@stu- I've always been crazy about my plans. Right now the dissatisfaction at my current job is helping with that. I need an action plan so that I feel like I am going towards something rather than stagnating.

@tia- Slow and steady describes my writing, that is for sure. I have to finish my undergrad before I can take the cert exam.

@t and s- Thanks :) It's mostly multi-tasking because they all will take so long to get done. But this time next year I will be so happy.

@lyrist- I feel like such a baby complaining about them, but there are so many nerve endings there.

I stuck it out with the wisdom teeth and now at 47, I'm past the point of needing them removed. Sorry you had some pain.
Lauren and Struggling Writer - I had enough Guinness on Saturday for all of us!
I'm not even making my whiskey cake this year as a result.

fun times...wisdom teeth, drugs, tests, & major school/work/life decisions. Best of luck balancing all of that and continuing to write. It's a tough struggle as I know first hand...and I applaud everyone who manages to carry it off. :)
